How to Choose Your Conveyancing Solicitor: Conflicting New Research

New research published by the Ministry of Justice has revealed how the public choose a Conveyancing Solicitor.

A sample of people, who had moved house in the last three years, was asked how they had first heard about their Conveyancing Solicitor.

Using the vernacular “heard” was not perhaps the most appropriate way of putting the question. This might have been construed too literally.

This may explain why in part the research is at odds with earlier work commissioned by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) on similar topics.

The findings of the Ministry of Justice research were that :

31% were recommended by Family or Friends

29% were referred by another organisation, such as an Estate Agent or Mortgage Adviser

22% were existing clients of the firm

6% had known someone who worked in the Conveyancing solicitor’s office

5% were physically aware of the Conveyancing Solicitor’s offices

3% searched for information

2% answered something differently or did not know.


The 3% who merely “searched for information” which could have involved picking up the Yellow Pages or other local directory or doing a Google search for “Conveyancing Solicitor” is at odds with previous research in 2009 by the SRA.

The SRA’s research had suggested that some 26% of people are now most likely to “find” their lawyer on the internet.

This compared with similar percentage, who stated they would use their family lawyer and a little bit more than the percentage who would ask for a recommendation from another organisation

My experience shows the Ministry’s Research underestimates considerably the number of people who make their minds up about a Conveyancing solicitor or firm of Conveyancing solicitors based on information gleaned from the internet.

Searching for your Conveyancing Solicitor on line may not yet be on a par or ahead of people who seek a recommendation from someone else, or who use the family or an existing solicitor.

This trend, as the power of Google, Yahoo and Bing grows will inevitably rise of the next few years.
