Who Won What at the Hogweed Trotters Awards for 2011?

by Paul Hajek on

hogweed trotters award winners 2011The 11th Annual Hogweed Trotters Running Club Awards were held on Sunday 5th February 2012 in Horton near Chipping Sodbury a fitting prelude to the more labourious award ceremonies such as the BAFTAs and the Oscars.

The “Hogweeds” as they are known reward runners for excellence endeavour and whole-heartedness loosely based on Shakespeare's maxim “wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast”

At one end of the spectrum, there is the Novice Award sponsored by sponsored by the club’s country retreat at the Beaufort Arms in Hawkesbury Upton for runners new to the sport; this year won by Sarah Port to the other end of the spectrum with the award of the Clutton Cox Club Champion to Alan Wilcox, in recognition of an incredible year with 117 races completed from 5k to 50miles and the small matter of a six day charity run from Bristol to Blackpool in June

Sterling performances during the year were rewarded to Barbera Denton (Ladies Cross Country Performance); Michelle Hodges (Ladies Best Short Race); Pat Curtis (Ladies Half Marathon Performance); Dawn Ridden (Ladies Best Marathon Performance).

Amongst the men, performances were recognised by awards to Lee Masters (Men’s Cross Country Performance); Mark Offer (Men’s Half Marathon Champion);  Mark Clements (The Men’s Marathon Award)

Jaroslaw (Jareck) Motyka winner of the award for Men’s Best Short Race Performance, had the Polish National Anthem playing (not the boring bit) as he collected his award

The prominence of triathlon participation amongst club members was recognised by the Club’s Triathlete of the Year to Mike Mitchell.

Uniquely, amongst running clubs, the Hogweeds have some more unusual awards.

The Laurence Award recognises a condition that baffles medical science. This year’s winner was Mark Wolf. The Laurence Award had four nominees – three of which were for Mark Wolf!!  He won it easily. The poor chap has been injured all year, yet produced great racing performances?

The Black Dog Award went to Alison Woods.  To give you a flavour of the award, previous winner repatriated an errant cow to the wrong farmer!

Alison Woods has never, ever arrived early, or on time in her 7 years with the club. We calculated 1050 visits to the club. Amazingly, she was even late for the awards! A week late in fact.

The Hogweeds Super Hero Award went to Michael Wenman.

The Peter Willoughby Award went to Ian Dickson, and the Club Personality of the Year to Vic Garner.

The awards were once again very well organised and an event which grows year on year.

A special mention to Chairman Bob Bell, who produced the day’s ceremony, wrote the script and compiled the 64 nominees (four per award); MC. Anthony Febry had ‘em rocking in the aisles with his wit & repartee! - it says here :) ; Will Gray for revealing the award winners; and for Honorary Club President  Colin Axford for handing over the prizes and winning T-shirts, whilst DJ supremo Daryl Hanson (available weekends and special functions) played the winning tunes; light show and doctoring of photographs and slides, by Steve Chandler

Keith Miles Catering were excellent and Brookers Mobile Bars were kept very very busy. Martin Cook complete with Willy Wonka was invaluable in promoting the event & selling tickets.

A big thank you to the Sponsors: Clutton Cox Conveyancing, Wills and Probate Solicitors, Chipping Sodbury: The Car Clinic, Kingswood, Wotton under Edge; the Gazeley Clinic, Iron Acton; Toll House Clinic, Chipping Sodbury; King Pin Electrical, Chipping Sodbury; Persides Ltd, Bristol;  the Moda Hotel, Chipping Sodbury; Bubble Driving School, Chipping Sodbury; Kopperz, Hair Studio, Charfield; the Squire Inn, Chipping Sodbury; Bourn Tube Systems, Old Sodbury; HJ Health & Sports Therapies, Yate, who kindly donated the prizes.

Until next year.....
